Virginia Duals 2011 Update
Friday: Penn State defeats Kent State 22-13 in the quarterfinals of the 2010 Virginia duals and moves on to take on No. 1 seed Oklahoma State tomorrow at 2pm.
Update part Deux: The official site has the results up. I was close in most of them but these are now the final scores.Penn State opened up with a 26-9 thrashing of Virginia Tech in the 2010 Virginia Duals. The Nittany Lions won 7 of 10 bouts to advance to the quarterfinals.
Bout by bout scores125: #12 Brad PatakyPSU dec. #13 Jarrod Garnett VT, 12-6
133: Brock LiVorio VT dec. Bryan Pearsall PSU, 5-3
141: #12 Chris Diaz VT dec. Adam Lynch PSU, 9-6
149: #5 Frank Molinaro PSU dec. Brian Stephens VT, 6-1
157: #7 Jesse Dong VT dec. #2 Cyler Sanderson PSU, 5-4 (RT)
165: #8 Dan Vallimont PSU dec. Matt Epperly VT, 4-3
174: Justin Ortega PSU win by forfeit
184: #14 David Erwin PSU dec. Tommy Spellman VT, 3-0
197: Clay Steadman PSU dec. Chris Penny VT, 4-1
285: #18 Cameron Wade PSU tech. fall Tim Miller VT, 15-0 (TF; 3:55)
The biggest disappointment was the upset loss by Cyler Sanderson who appeared to have problems getting out from the bottom position in the third period. Other than that it was a good showing by the rest of the team. Adam Lynch turned in one of his better performances keeping it close to the 12th-ranked wrestler and Brad Pataky dismantled Garnett at 125. Virginia Tech was behind the eight ball from the start, they were without a wrestler at 174 and they had a backup 197 pounder wrestling at heavyweight. Penn State will now face No. 13 Kent State in the next round today at 1 p.m.
Bout by bout scoring125 – Brad Pataky (PSU) def. Troy Opfer 9-4
133- Bryan Pearsall (PSU) loses 12-3
141- Adam Lynch (PSU) pins Chase Skonieczny
149- Frank Molinaro (PSU) def. Tommy Sasfy 8-2
157- Cyler Sanderson (PSU) def. Mallie Shuster 19-7
165- Dan Vallimont (PSU) def. Obie Simpson 6-2
174- Keith Witt def. Justin Ortega (PSU) 3-1
184: Dustin Kilgore def. David Erwin (PSU) 11-5
197: Adam Cogar def. Clay Steadman (PSU) 2-1 (TB)
285: Cameron Wade (PSU) def Brendan Barlow 3-1 (SV)
Take those scores with a grain of salt, I was listening to the broadcast from the Virginia Duals website live so I may not have got them 100% accurate.
Saturday Update: Penn State loses to Oklahoma State 24-13 in semifinals of the Virginia Duals. The Nittany Lions will face Oklahoma for third place tonight at 8:30.
Bout by bout scoring
125 - Pataky vs Notte – L 9-7
133 - Pearsall vs Oliver – L 14-4
141 - Lynch vs Parks – L FALL
149 - Molinaro vs Fuentes – W Major
157 - Sanderson vs Erisman – W 5-4
165 - Vallimont vs Meade – W 2-1
174 - Ortega vs Benefeil – L 20-5 (TF)
184 - Erwin vs McNeil – W 9-3
197 - Crowell vs Gelogeav – L 14-7
HWT - Wade vs Roesholt – L 4-0
Pataky's loss was somewhat disappointing given that he really didn't do much in the final 45 seconds of the third period. The Lynch fall was too much for Penn State to come back from but Erwin had a dominating match against a previously undefeated McNeil who was also ranked 11th, 3 places ahead of Erwin.

I dunno what's worse: The fact that Cyler Sanderson lost, or the fact that he got beat by a Dong.
ReplyDeleteHa! I'd say the Dong part is more embarrassing.
