Tuesday Recruitin': Scout releases Top 300

Eric Shrive faxing in his letter, 10 months after giving a verbal commitment to the Lions.

In terms of handing out offers, recruiting action could take a dip. Penn State has about 20 offers out right now, which is about right for mid-Spring. As players fall away, you can be sure the Nittany Lions staff will replace those lost prospects with new ones.

Even though the offers could slow, it's far from unusual for Penn State to begin receiving verbal commitments from recruits. Take, for example, Penn State's class of 2009. By May 15, 2008, Mark Arcidacono, Frank Figueroa, Darrel Givens (never enrolled), Ty Howle, Stephen Obeng-Ogyapong, Eric Shrive, Derrick Thomas, and Malcolm Willis all gave solid verbal commitments to the Nittany Lions.

While I'm not predicting that this class will come close to that number, it's a great snapshot of how Penn State likes to get it's recruiting classes in early.

"New" Offer

I'll admit, I missed this one. But it looks like back in March Penn State offered Kentucky offensive line prospect Zach West (Rivals/Scout/ESPN), out of Lexington Christian. He's not a super star recruit, but comes out of the Bluegrass State with a good review among scouts. West has offers from a couple BCS programs, including Cincinnati, Louisville, and Arkansas.

Penn State doesn't exactly have a reputation for recruiting well in Kentucky (or anywhere in the South, really), but someone must have seen something in this kid.

300

Late last week, the Scout.com 2010 Top-300 Recruits was released. Here are some names that have Penn State either listed in the "schools of interest" slot, or are being actively recruited by the Nittany Lions:

    - No punter/kicker -- not usually in top 300
    - Enough takers for 15-16 scholarships?
    - Not as fast a group as last year?

Observation of action by other colleges:
    - Top teams not interested: only Texas, Boise St, TCU, BYU, Utah, Navy -- meaning the 33 are relatively well-recruited
    - Each prospect is interested in 14.3 teams
    - Besides PSU, 75 colleges are interested
    - Florida is interested in 10 of them!
