BlogPoll 2010: Preseason Ballot

Welcome to the cusp of another college football season and the inevitable preseason poll that accompany its return. I'll be honest with you, you won't see a more worthless post this year than a preseason poll. But what you will find with the BlogPoll is that at least it doesn't handicap teams as the season progresses. In most polls if you're not in the Top 10 to begin the season, you are essentially eliminated from MNC contention before you play a down. The BlogPoll is more fluid, not relying so much on preseason preconceptions, as the product on the field. I'll break down things in a very similar style to how I had handled each week back at The Nittany Line, where I'll give you a look at who each team played and give you a little summary of the movers or trends. In the meantime, here's our preseason offering, mostly generic with weight given to conference favorites (thus Temple's inclusion). Questions, corrections, suggestions and objections are always welcome.

  1. Ok, let me have at this one... I love poll stuff...

First, Iowa and Ohio State should be swapped. I would bet on OSU running the regular season table this year.

Next, I love Boise State where you have them. I think this year everyone feels obligated to "give" them a top-4 spot. But you're smarter than that. If the Broncos beat VT, then they get the top-4 nod.

Finally, I think LSU is in for a big-time rude awakening this season. They lose some important talent, and frankly, Les Miles isn't as good a coach as everyone makes him out to be, at least when it comes to winning games his teams should.

    Oh yeah, GO OWLS!

  2. I really like Wisconsin this season, they don't get much press, I think they will have a good season, a quiet season, but they'll turn some heads before its all said and done.

  3. For Wisconsin, it's all about the O-Line. Five starters returning, and they're all monsters. Plus, one of the two best running backs in the Big Ten (Clay and Royster).

  4. +1 on Whisky- I've been saying for months that this is their year. In addition to above points, Tolzien is #1 passer rating last year, Offense dominates time of possesion- #2 nationally. They have OSU at home in a big night game. And their defense will be much improved. I know they play Iowa at home, but I'm just not that impressed w/ Iowa- they were in too many close games and their luck is due to run out.

  5. I like Iowa taking the Big Ten over Ohio State, because when it comes down to it I trust Stanzi more than Pryor, and I considered Wisconsin in the Top 10, but I'm still not sold on Bielema yet (neither are the Wisconsin fans I know). All that being said, we'll see what happens when teams take the field. I really wish they wouldn't do a preseason BlogPoll.

  6. It pains me to say this, but I feel Ohio State has the experience and leadership to take the Big Ten...again. Iowa's defense will keep them in games, but will struggle late to keep it together. With that said, I see the Big Ten finishing...1) Penn State 2) Iowa 3) Penn St 4) Wisconsin 5) Michigan State. Wisconsin is getting a lot of preseason love from the pollsters and will again disappoint the Badger faithful; Bielema is under a lot of pressure to put a solid season together...anything less than a top 15 finish will put him on the hot seat.

  7. The only thing about Wisconsin is that every year they are really hyped, they disappoint. If the Badgers came into the year in the low-teens, I'd say watch out. Still, I think this year they are the real deal, especially with that O-line.
