Lady Lions headed to the Big Ten championship, rout Illinois 79-64

The Lady Lions are on their way to the Big Ten final against whichever team wins tonight's Michigan State/Ohio State, following their up-and-down 79-64 demolition of a red-hot Illinois squad today in Indy. Big Ten freshman of the year Maggie Lucas finished with 23 points, including five 3-pointers to break the Big Ten single-season record, and five rebounds. The team's lone senior, Julia Trogele, was equally dynamic with 20 points and nine rebounds.

Penn State, now 24-8 this season, was down by one point at halftime against Purdue in yesterday's quarterfinals. Then today, the Lady Lions were up by only two at the break against Illinois, a worrisome difference after leading by 16 earlier in the first half, then actually trailing by one about four minutes into the second half. Not to mention that Illinois is a terrible team that just happen to pull two massive upsets against Wisconsin and Michigan in the first two rounds.

Penn State led the Illini 35-33 at halftime, but just as against Purdue, went on to dominate later in the second half, outscoring the Illini 44-31 the rest of the way.

The Michigan State vs Ohio State game will tip off in a few minutes. Check this post later tonight for a final score.

Update: Ohio State 72, MSU 57
