This just in, folks. Penn State and the Navy Midshipmen have agreed to a single meeting in football, set for Sept. 15, 2012 in Beaver Stadium. From the release:
"We are excited to have Navy returning to the Penn State football schedule," said Curley. "Navy was our season opening opponent a number of times in the 1960's and '70's and we've had many memorable games against the Midshipmen. Navy has a great football tradition and has returned to being one of the top programs in the nation during the past decade. We're looking forward to having Navy playing again in Beaver Stadium."This is shaping up to be a great 2012 non-conference schedule, as--get this--it will NOT feature any FCS (I-AA) opponents.
But this game actually kind of freaks me out a bit, from a purely football stance. Navy has been notoriously good against teams that aren't used to playing them. Watch this, and you'll know what I mean...

I was sitting under the pressbox for this game last year, and the scary thing was that Ohio State's defense had major problems stopping that triple option/flexbone attack, especially with Ricky Dobbs' ability to throw the ball.
ReplyDeleteOn the flip side, this game would have never reached that climax if OSU had chosen to kick a short field goal with 6:30 remaining in the 4th, rather than going for it (the field goal would have made it an 18-point game). Instead, Navy's defense held, kept themselves down by two scores, and we all know the rest.
Another note on last year's game. Everyone in the stadium was thinking that Navy was going to run the option on that 2-point conversion, because OSU hadn't stopped it all day, especially in short yardage situations. And instead, Dobbs throws an interception.

ReplyDeleteI can't blame them for going for it when they were up by 15, get a first down the game is all but over at that point. That said, hindsight is always 20-20 and that decision looks like a bad one now.
