LBU Video: Kevin Newsome Freshman Season 2009

With the rapidly growing quarterback controversy hysteria among Penn State fans and pundits, I thought this would be a worthwhile addition to our LBU Videos collection.

In this clip, I put together every single snap from 2009 in which Kevin Newsome either carried or passed the football.

I was really hoping to post this video within this week's Thursday Question, since I picked Kevin Newsome as my surprise breakout offensive player for 2010.

But I ran into some issues with the Eastern Illinois tape (super h/t to LBU reader Mike Bianchini for helping me out with it!), which was the one game Newsome saw the most action. So, I couldn't leave that game out. Enjoy, and let the bickering begin...

  1. This is great stuff...the video...not his actual play

  2. Bring on Paul Jones/Robert Bolden.

  3. @Devon You're joking. Right?

  4. Man that number looks familiar.

  5. I totally forgot that Newsome actually saw meaningful PT against Indiana. I'm also certain everyone in the stadium knew what the play call was going to be when he lined up under center and Clark lined up as a receiver (sigh).

  6. I think the PSU coaches thought the home team would be winning by a bit more during that game. It looked like the plan going in was to get Newsome more playing time against a real opponent before it turned into garbage time, yet in the comfy environment of Beaver Stadium. The problem was that Clark, Astorino and Zug couldn't stop giving the ball back to Indiana.

I don't know about anyone else, but I seriously didn't think Newsome had the BURST when running the ball. He actually looks faster than Mike Robinson.

You know me better than to think I'd be joking. I think PJ or Bolden may well put PSU in a better position to win than Newsome would. I want Newsome to win the job, but I don't want him to have it handed to him if the freshmen are better.

  8. He is faster than Robinson, but does he have the offensive line that Robinson had?

  9. @Devon I share the sentiment that if Jones or Bolden are, in fact, actually better than Newsome, the best QB needs the job. But I'm still just baffled that so many people like yourself talk about Jones or Bolden as if they are known quantities at all.

  11. I sure hope the coaches have worked on his ball control...watching him scramble against E. Illinois made me cringe. Otherwise he didn't look so bad. Unfortunately, the throws were mostly garbage time screens and broken plays. It will be interesting to see what he can really do from the pocket after a second year in the system.

I truly feel PSU will be fine this year regardless of who starts, so may the coaches pick the best player. If OSU was able to win in '08 with Pryor as a true freshman, who's to say we can't win with Newsome, if he is chosen as the guy??

  12. Interesting! I expect Newsome to be much more mature this season after growing a year and taking most of the pre-season snaps. In a way, he does some of the same things Tebow did at Florida as far as running although he depends more on quickness while Tebow was more of a power guy. The only concern is that if he's going to run, we better be able to depend on the other three guys because its likely that Newsome is going to get beat up!
