Always For The Glory: Week 1 NFL Update

I'm not expecting too much for Penn State this Saturday, but I'm still pumped as hell for football this week. Sure its a new season for the J-E-T-S and my fantasy football team, but there's nothing better than watching the former Nittany Lions that I saw running out of the Beaver Stadium tunnel now try and make it into the league on Sundays.

There are PSU alum all over the NFL map this season, one of which we get to see make his NFL debut tonight as Micky Shuler's Vikings take on the defending champion New Orleans Saints. Brett Favre loves throwing to his tight ends, but Shuler slots in at third on the depth chart behind Visanthe Shiancoe and Jim Kleinsasser.

While many Lions dropped from NFL teams like flies during the final round of roster cuts, here are some Penn Staters to pay attention to this season.

Derrick Williams, Lions: Some were disappointed by his play at Penn State, and many in Detroit are disappointed by the way he has started his career there as well. He needs to prove himself in the return game this season to keep his spot on the team.

Deon Butler, Seahawks: Exit T.J Who's Your Moma, and enter the all-time receptions leader in PSU history. Butler has already made a good impression on new head coach Pete Carroll, and has a chance to get some serious playing time for the Seahawks.

Jared Odrick, Dolphins: The first rounder needs no explanation. He's starting on the Miami defensive line and has excelled in practice. He should be a force in the NFL, hopefully not against the Jets though.

Aaron Maybin, Bills: The only time he has been noticed in his yearin Buffalo has been for fighting with his own teammates. Maybin has been the biggest bust in the entire first round from 2009, and needs to prove himself this season to remain a Bill.

Paul Posluszny, Bills: I don't think it shocks anyone reading this that Pos has lived up to expectations in the pros. The kid is a stud. As long as he stays healthy, he will continue to thrive.

Sean Lee, Cowboys: He missed the first Cowboys preseason game for being "two intense". I don't think any more needs to be said. If he can stay on the field, Lee has a chance to be a difference maker for America's team.

Navorro Bowman: Bowman has some pretty good tutors to learn from in his rookie season: Patrick Willis and Mike Singletary. Not too shabby. Let's see if he takes advantage of this opportunity....and stays out of trouble.

Some other PSU alums to keep an eye out for include offensive tackle Levi Brown with the Cardinals, Josh Hull and Justin King with the Rams, Michael Robinson debuting with the Seahawks, and veterans Larry Johnson with the Redskins and Kerry Collins with the Titans.

Oh the good old days of 2005.
