Bill Belton verbals to Penn State

Bill Belton is the only QB in New Jersey
history to pass for 2,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards
in a season in back-to-back years.

Seemingly every time I step away from the computer lately, Penn State lands a new football commitment. This time, it's New Jersey's athlete/receiver prospect Bill Belton. Via Sean Fitz:
"He was here for a home visit and basically sat down and talked with us and hit it off with my parents," he said. "It was something that I felt good about and my parents felt good about, so I just went ahead and did it."
This is a very nice pickup, particularly after losing Ishaq Williams to Notre Dame last week. Belton was originally part of Pitt's fantastic recruiting class. But he de-committed once Dave Wannstedt was forced to resign.
This is the second former Pitt verbal to swing his commitment to Penn State. And while Belton isn't quite on the same recruiting level as Williams, he is very versatile on both sides of the ball. But which side, you ask? From BWI:
"They see me fitting in where Curtis Drake is playing now," Belton said. "A little bit of nickel back maybe, but not too much, mostly as a slot receiver and an offensive weapon."
It's good to show kids examples of what they are expected to do on campus. If Penn State does want to use Belton in a similar role to Drake's, then there is a good chance on a redshirt freshman season for the Garden Stater. Drake will be a redshirt sophomore this season (he sat out 2010 with a leg injury), so I can't imagine Penn State will have two players acting as offensive "slash" players at the same time. But like Drake, Belton was a quarterback in high school... and a damn good one, too, passing for 2,000 and rushing for 1,000 yards in back-to-back seasons. That's never been done before in New Jersey.

Welcome aboard, Bill.
