Penn State Recruiting the Trenches in 2011 Will Pay Off Down the Road

2010 Penn State vs Michigan State
Recruiting depth along the lines is critical to any team's success.
Penn State knows this all too well.

Forget those god-awful star ratings. Ignore the class rankings. Never mind how many "skill" players Penn State brings in with its 2011 recruiting class.

Why?

Because everything depends, and will depend, on how well Penn State can recruit and develop the offensive and defensive lines in the next 2, 3, and 4 years.

Always for the Glory: Week 2 NFL Update

Updated: 7:45 p.m.
Poz is hurt again... ugh!
It's not just the current group of Penn Staters that are down in the dumps after a tough weekend. A couple of Penn State's most prominent alums were forced to the sideline after just one week of NFL action. Jared Odrick will miss two weeks with a broken fibula, and Paul Posluszny will miss two to three weeks with a sprained right knee. And probably the worst news came just a few hours ago, that Josh Hull tore his ACL in practice today, and will be lost for the season.

It wasn't all bad though for PSU's most prominent alumni. Here are some highlights from your favorite former Nittany Lions after week one.

Paul Posluszny, LB, Bills: It ended on a low note for the former PSU captain, but Posluszny dominated the division rival Dolphins before getting hurt. He compiled eight total tackles, including sacking Miami quarterback Chad Henne, finally getting revenge for a certain 2005 game that will go unmentioned.

Dan Connor, LB, Panthers: Connor's been battling injury throughout his NFL career, but is now finally healthy, and starting at linebacker for the Panthers. He was a beast in his first start last week, with 13 total tackles, one sack, and three tackles for loss in the 31-18 loss to the New York Giants.

Royster Sixth on ESPN's Heisman Watch

For as long as I can remember, the Heisman Trophy winner has come from a team that you know, wins....a lot. Usually they're in the BCS Championship or another prestigious bowl game.

I posted a few days ago how the local media collectively predicted Penn State to win 8 games. Ivan Maisel clearly isn't a member of the local media. He puts Evan Royster sixth on his Heisman watch list.
"Evan Royster, Penn State: A veteran line and a young quarterback translate into a lot of responsibility -- and opportunity -- for this senior running back."
Excuse me? Veteran offensive line!?!? Perhaps by age, but I don't think I have to tell you this offensive line isn't quite experienced. Then again, can't really expect any more from ESPN. I still have yet to hear them mention a single Penn State player's name on the air. Earth to the World Wide Leader, there's more than just a coach here in the valley.

Quarterback Prognostication

As long as the practices remain closed to the media, you could spin a wheel and have just as good of a guess at who the quarterback is going to be as any of us. It seems Joe is only promoting baseless speculation by keeping media in the dark. But that being the case, Devon over at Nittany White Out takes a look back at what some reporters have been saying regarding the QB situation.

To those who question whether Joe Paterno would start a freshman, or undermine Kevin Newsome–I think you’re reading into things a bit too far. Just because Daryll Clark didn’t usurp Anthony Morelli doesn’t mean that in a wide-open field that the best player won’t win the job. You don’t become the best coach in college football history through stubbornness and obstinacy, and Joe is going to put his team in the best possible position to win. If that means Robert Bolden is going to start games under center, so be it.

To me, I'm not looking at Clark's competition with Morelli, but rather his battle with Pat Devlin. I'll believe that Paterno goes to a freshman at quarterback when I see it.

You mean Alabama is NOT the football version of the '98 Yankees?

You'd think that Penn State was going to go ahead and forfeit based on all the pessimistic talk from the PSU side of things (myself included). But Black Shoe Diaries points out that Alabama isn't both an unstoppable force and an unmovable object, they don't scare the ball and make it run away, they can't bend glass, or any other Chuck Norris turned Jack Bauer facts. They are not perfect after all.

"If this was all happening halfway through the season during a bye week I would say no big deal. Every team hits the wall at some point in the season. Their bodies hurt, they are mentally exhausted, maybe a weaker opponent is coming up and they just let up on the effort. You have to expect that. But this is the second week of preseason practice. You would think after an entire summer of lifting weights and running drills with football just three weeks away that these guys would be chomping at the bit to strap on the pads and hit each other. Especially with nine slots open on defense that are up for grabs.

But instead we're hearing that Alabama is having problems getting motivated? To me, that's a serious red flag if I'm a Crimson Tide fan. That tells me these guys spent the summer reading the headlines and celebrating their championship instead of finishing hard on that last sprint or fighting through that last bench press when your arms feel like they have nothing left to give. Nobody is going to give you anything just because you're Alabama. Let's hope they learn that the hard way on September 11."

Women's Soccer Favored to Win Big Ten

We posted yesterday that the women's volleyball team received the number one overall ranking in the first preseason poll. Whether that is based on last year's (and the two years before that) performance or actual returning talent, I can't say for sure, but they aren't the only women's team on campus primed for a big year.

The women's soccer team was picked to win the Big Ten. I won't pretend to be informed to dissect their chances, but will instead refer you to the press release.

From the Professional Ranks: Anthony Scirrotto signs on with the Eagles, Derrick Williams is hoping not to be as pathetic this year, Jared Odrick is off to a good start in South Beach, and Ben Heath is a monster.

Oh, and Brett Favre is coming back...again. Remember when "multiple reports" said he was retiring?

Jared Odrick, Navorro Bowman Sign

As a die heart Jet fan, it kills me to see Jared Odrick in Miami. One pick! They missed Odrick by one pick! Urgh! Nonetheless, you can't help but be happy for the kid, signing a 5 year 7.1 million dollar contract with Miami.

"It's more of a relief than anything," said Odrick, when reached by cell phone in Miami on Thursday night. "I felt it was a matter of business, really. I wanted to get to campon time and we (agent Drew Rosenhaus and the Do
lphins front office) got that accomplished. This is a business thing. I'm going to work tomorrow."
"It was very importan
Bulleted Listt to Jared to report on time," Rosenhaus told the Associated Press. "The other day he said to me'Do everything you can so I can report Thursday night for the first meeting.'"

Quite refreshing to see a high character guy like Odrick focused on getting to camp on time, rather than a certain Pitt defensive player purely focused on getting the most money.

Odrick wasn't the only Lion to sign, as the Collegian's Footblog tells us Navorro Bowman inked a four year deal with the 49ers and is reporting to camp on time.

"Realistically, it's going to take a really strong training camp for Bowman to become a key contributor this season, but he should be able to turn some heads. Whether he does this by playing special teams or by being featured in sub packages remains to be seen. But for now, being at camp on time is certainly a plus."

There's Only One Coach Without a Cell Phone

Take it to the bank, Lions fans. You wont see Joe Paterno being accused of any NCAA violations for improperly texting recruits. Why? Well you need a cell phone to text, last I checked. Paterno finished up his chat with Rich Scarcella of the Reading Eagle, and talked about his use of technology, among a bunch of other topics.

"If somebody wants me, they know how to get me. They may not get me right away. They may call in the morning and Sandi (Segursky, his administrative assistant) will call me and tell me I have three messages. "OK, I'll get back to them this afternoon." I don't need a cell phone.

I know how to use a cell phone. I don't know how to use these phones that they use to take a picture. I'm walking around the campus or walking down the park in the back of my house, and somebody runs out carrying this little thing that looks like a cigarette lighter and takes a picture."
And no, he doesn't have a twitter either.

And the Starters at QB, LB is..........Not so Fast My Friend

You may be playing with Kevin Newsome on your Play Station 3, but the actual starter has yet to be announced (in case you've been living under a rock).

While everyone and their grandmother is talking about the quarterback battle, Cory Giger takes a look at the battle that may have a far greater impact on this team and a position that this website holds very dearly-linebacker.

He mentions that the starters are currently slated to be Chris Colasanti, Nate Stupar, and Bani Gbadyu. But it's a comment that Stupar made about backup Mike Mauti that interests me.
Asked if Mauti is back to 100 percent, Stupar replied, "I'd say it's better than that - 110 percent. He's looking awesome."
Mauti was always an exceptional talent that was supposed to give Josh Hull a run at the starting gig last year before getting hurt. If he truly is 110%, why not give him a shot at starting?

Big Ten Network the Place to Be

If you find hours of live press conferences and lip service to be riveting television, then the next couple days are right up your alley. The Big Ten Network and ESPN News will be covering Big Ten Media Day today with the Big Ten Network airing additional coverage tomorrow. Coverage begins this morning at 11 a.m.

Or if you have something else to do on a Monday morning like work perhaps, then you have a couple choices. Either set your DVR, or if you can sneak onto bigtennetwork.com, they will be airing the interviews on their site as well

No Top 25?

Pre-season rankings may very well be meaningless, but that doesn't mean they aren't fun to talk about. Sporting News published their Top 100 Division 1-A college football teams this past Saturday. They gave the Big Ten a ton of respect, including three teams in the top 15.

Ohio State is right behind Alabama at two, Wisconsin slides in as the eighth ranked team, and Iowa gets the 13th spot. Notice I didn't mention Penn State. That's because they didn't even make the top 25, sliding in as the 32nd ranked team in the pre-season rankings.

Guess there must be some sort of uncertainty surrounding this year's team or something. Who knew?

Linkbacker U knows Penn State is the only 'Linebacker U'

Try telling this guy Penn State isn't Linebacker U...

If there is one thing that really ticks us off here, it's when someone claims another college football program has taken over the "Linebacker U" nickname from Penn State. When that happens, rest assured, because that person is an idiot.

I know this to be true for one reason--Dennis Dodd thinks Ohio State is the new Linebacker U, and Dennis Dodd is, now beyond reasonable doubt, an idiot.
Three times since 2002, Ohio State has played for the national championship, winning one. Best of all in this Buckeye company town: It has eviscerated Michigan lately, stuffed the remains in a 55-gallon drum and hidden what's left out in the woods. Along the way, it arguably has lapped Penn State as Linebacker U. in the last decade, produced a Heisman winner while fervently following the precepts of a bookish man who believes that the punt may be the game's best weapon.
Let's be clear on this. Ohio State could not have even arguably lapped Penn State as Linebacker U. That is because there is no argument to be had. I'll make this short and sweet. No matter how hard Dennis Dodd, or anyone else, tries to change college football history and culture, Penn State will always be Linebacker U. This is not like Miami as Quarterback U, or USC as Tailback U, as those programs have only a modest working relationship with those monikers. No, the Linebacker U nickname to the Penn State culture is on the level of Bear Bryant to Alabama, the "Blackshirts" to Nebraska, or the "Script Ohio" to the Buckeyes--it's ours. Dodd can say otherwise all he wants. But nothing will change it: Penn State is Linebacker U, end of story.

Jay Paterno takes us back to a time when Coca-Cola was served in Beaver Stadium.
"In the early 1970s I sat in the open end zone bleachers. After the 1978 expansion I sat in SK -- the “Kids’ Section,” where kids sat at the price of (I hope you’re sitting down for this) $4 a game. The price jumped to $6 a game. Adjusting for the rate of inflation, that 1978 ticket would cost just over $20 today.

I sat in the end zone all the way until the 1983 season, when I started working in the press box for Sports Information.

Working at the stadium was something a lot of my friends did. Whether it was selling Cokes (Coca-Cola was the official PSU drink then) or programs, parking cars or scalping tickets, there were a lot of jobs that State College kids worked on game days."
As always, JayPa gives us a good read.

Jared Odrick signed a deal this week with the Miami Dolphins. And it's quite nice at that. From CFT:
"Jared Odrick's deal has $7.133 million guaranteed and max package of $13 million over 5 years, according to league source."
This kid deserves everything he gets, because he's sure earned it. Congrats, Jared!

The Big Ten Kickoff Luncheon is next week, with all the hoo-ha that comes with it. Time to get excited, folks, cause FOOTBALL is just around the corner. Adam Rittenberg gives us the rundown for next week:
"I've been told that division alignment and scheduling are the top two priorities and should be resolved before Sept. 1. The Big Ten will present data and proposals to the athletic directors, who expect to reach a consensus, like they have on other major topics in the past. Although divisions and a championship game are very likely, nothing is guaranteed. Don't expect any resolution on a championship game next week, although the league certainly has no shortage of options. The Big Ten could go with a rotation or a permanent site, as Roy Kramer advocates. Venues like Detroit's Ford Field, Indianapolis' Lucas Oil Stadium, Chicago's Soldier Field, Cleveland Browns Stadium and Green Bay's Lambeau Field all have expressed interest in hosting the event."
And so much more! Can't wait.

Ex-Oregon QB Jeremiah Masoli has enrolled at Ole Miss, proving that the SEC will take anyone if it means the chance to win even one more game. But if you're looking for the dramatic side of this story, worry not, because SI.com's got you covered.

You probably recall my little rant on Ron Musselman's July 22 recruiting article, in which he deliberately drove the storyline to infer that Joe Paterno is dooming Penn State recruiting, forever and ever. Well, I'm back talking about Ron again, but this time it's not going to be a rant, or a fisking, or anything else.

But first, a little background on today's PPG circus. On Tuesday, Ron Musselman went on 1250 ESPN in Pittsburgh talking about, as one FOS($) poster described it, "how much of a down year this will be and that Joe will get his 400 wins and then go. He cited that the offense will be terrible and that Newsome might have the ability but lacks experience and leadership skills. He said Paul Jones is the best athlete and called Matt McGloin starting a joke. He also predicted a '...smackdown by Nick Saban and Alabama'"

Now, I'll buy the idea that Penn State could have a down season this year--if by "down" you mean nine wins--or that Alabama might be able to beat the Nittany Lions by more than a touchdown or two. But for Ron to trash Penn State like it was his cheating ex-girlfriend seems to be a bit over the top here.

There is no way I could possibly sit here and counter every negative thing Ron writes or says about Penn State. There simply aren't enough hours in the day for that. So, seeing how the internet is probably the single best STFU tool every invented, let's take a quick look at Ron's analytical track record on Penn State football, shall we?

I said good day, sir!

Dolphins Draft Jared Odrick in First Round

The Miami Dolphins used their 28th pick in tonight's NFL Draft to select Penn State's own Jared Odrick. The senior defensive tackle was named the Big Ten's Defensive Player of the Year, and Defensive Lineman of the Year in 2009.

Odrick came to Penn State as a very highly-touted defensive end, which will bode well for his projected NFL position in Miami. The Dolphins are expected to use Odrick as a defensive end.

Congratulations, Jared!

Abbreviated Media Roundup: Penn State's Pro Day

Sean Lee (45) ran a 4.55 40-yard dash at Penn State's Pro Day yesterday.

Here we go, the short-short version...

Richard Scarcella, The Reading Eagle:
Hello, Anthony Morelli. And where've you been?

Morelli was one of 22 former Penn State players who worked out for scouts from all 32 NFL teams. It's been more than two years since he played his last game that counted, the 2007 Alamo Bowl against Texas A&M.

"I'm only 24 years old," he said. "I'm young. I still have a lot in the tank. I just really love the game. There's no quit in me. I'm going to keep going until I exhaust all options."

Bernard Fernandez, Philly.com:
"Did I help myself? Well, I got a lot of positive reviews," Clark said. "The question [the scouts] have been asking is whether I'm consistent enough to play in the NFL. I feel like I answered that question today."

There has been some speculation that the 6-2, 232-pound Clark could follow in the footsteps of one of his mentors, former Penn State quarterback Michael Robinson, who is now a backup running back with the San Francisco 49ers. Clark and his agent, onetime Penn State and NFL wide receiver Chafie Fields, indicated they'd be resistant to a position change, at least for now, as well as to the possibility of playing in the Canadian Football League.

Mike Poorman, StateCollege.com:
If there was a circus atmosphere in TebowhaseverythingtoGainesville, then the sunny day and heightened hopes at Holuba Hall truly made it a Happy Valley. At least before the players were X’ed out.

The former Nittany Lions walked in twos and threes from the Lasch Building -- where their height and weight were recorded and their bench presses were tallied -- to Holuba Hall at around 10:30 in the morning. The majority of the group was smiling, happy, upbeat and a bit antsy. Most chatted easily with the three reporters gathered.

A few, however, already saw the future and it was bleak.

“How many bench presses did you do?” cornerback A.J. Wallace was asked.

Jeff Rice, CDT:
Hull, who ran a disappointing 4.91-second 40 in Indianapolis, was clocked at 4.71 Wednesday.

“That was my main emphasis coming in today, and I knocked it down two tenths of a second,” said the Milheim native, who also bettered his combine numbers in the broad jump and 3-cone drill. “So I was happy with what I did.”

Bowman, about eight pounds heavier (237) than he was when he played in the Capital One Bowl in January, ran a 4.61, down from 4.72 in Indianapolis.

He also set up meetings in the coming weeks with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Dallas Cowboys. Lee, who ran a 4.74 at the combine, was clocked in the 4.55 range Wednesday.

Bob Flounders, Patriot-News:
PSU tight end Mickey Shuler Jr. spent the last two months training for Wednesday's Pro Day at a performance center in Pensacola, Fla.. He believes he made the most of his one shot and is hoping for some workout invites from NFL teams.

Several former teammates congratulated Shuler after his Wednesday workout, including Bowman. The 6-4, 251-pound Shuler said he ran in the 4.6s, broad-jumped almost 11 feet, was measured at 37 inches in the vertical jump and bench-pressed 225 pounds 28 times. Those aren't good numbers. They are great numbers.

“Not too shabby,'' joked Shuler, an East Pennsboro High School grad.

The 2010 NFL Draft begins in prime time, April 22.
